Cost Per Wearing: A Modest Wardrobe Over Ten Years
Count a modest wardrobe the way a saver counts a portfolio: price paid, wears survived, repair cost, and the year a garment stops being worth mending.

A modest wardrobe costs less per wearing when you count it the way a patient saver counts a portfolio: price paid divided by wears survived, plus repairs, minus the year the garment stops being worth mending. A $90 abaya worn 400 times costs 22 cents a wearing; the same abaya worn 40 times costs $2.25. The number that matters is not the rail, it is the division. A saver who tracks a long term accumulation plan watches the cost of each contribution against the years it works, not the size of the monthly transfer.
How to work out the cost of one wearing
Write down three figures for each garment: the price paid, the number of wears it has survived, and the money spent keeping it in service. Divide the first plus the third by the second. That is the cost per wearing.
A $140 nida abaya worn twice a week for three years has roughly 300 wears. With $20 of hem repairs, the cost per wearing is $160 divided by 300, or 53 cents. A $35 jersey dress worn once a month for two years has 24 wears and no repairs, so $1.46 a wearing. The cheaper garment costs nearly three times more per wear.
Keep the count honest. A wear means the garment left the house or spent a full day on the body. Trying it on in front of a mirror does not count. A garment worn twice a week for a year is 104 wears, not 365. Most women overcount by counting days owned instead of days worn.
This is the same arithmetic an investor runs when judging a holding: money in, years held, income collected. A wardrobe works the same way. The price tag is the contribution. The wears are the years.
Which repairs are still worth paying for on an old garment
A repair is worth paying for when its cost, divided by the wears it adds, stays below the garment's current cost per wearing. That is the whole test.
A $25 hem repair on an abaya with 300 wears behind it and 100 wears ahead adds 25 cents per wearing. If the garment's running cost is 53 cents, the repair is cheaper than replacement and worth doing. A $60 lining replacement on a $90 abaya with 50 wears left adds $1.20 per wearing, more than the garment is worth. Let it go.
Repairs that usually pass the test: hem shortening, seam restitching, button and snap replacement, small patch on a hidden panel, elastic replacement in a waistband. Repairs that usually fail: full relining, replacing a worn collar on a structured coat, rebuilding a zipper in a lightweight fabric, rebeading a heavily embellished piece. The labour on those runs close to the price of a new garment.
Two rules keep the count clean. First, never repair a garment you have stopped wearing; the added wears will be zero. Second, repair before the damage spreads. A two-inch hem tear costs $15 to fix; the same tear left for six months takes the panel with it and costs $45.
Why buying fewer pieces changes the yearly figure
Fewer pieces means more wears per piece, and more wears per piece means a lower cost per wearing across the whole wardrobe. The arithmetic is not subtle.
Take two wardrobes. Wardrobe A has 20 pieces bought at an average of $60, worn an average of 30 times each. Total spend $1,200, total wears 600, cost per wearing $2.00. Wardrobe B has 8 pieces bought at an average of $120, worn an average of 150 times each. Total spend $960, total wears 1,200, cost per wearing 80 cents.
Wardrobe B spent less money and got twice the wears. The yearly figure falls for two reasons: fewer purchases means less total outlay, and each purchase is worn harder because there is less to rotate through. A wardrobe of 30 pieces spreads the same 1,000 annual wears thin; a wardrobe of 10 pieces puts 100 wears on each.
The trap is buying fewer pieces at the same low quality. Eight cheap garments worn 40 times each cost more per wearing than eight good ones worn 150 times each. The count rewards durability, not austerity.
What a ten-year wardrobe actually costs
Run the numbers over a decade. A woman who buys 4 pieces a year at an average of $85 spends $3,400 over ten years on 40 garments. If each garment averages 120 wears, that is 4,800 wears and a cost per wearing of 71 cents. Add $400 of repairs across the decade and the figure rises to 79 cents.
A woman who buys 2 pieces a year at an average of $150 spends $3,000 on 20 garments. If each averages 250 wears, that is 5,000 wears and a cost per wearing of 60 cents. Add $300 of repairs and the figure is 66 cents.
The second wardrobe spent $400 less and got 200 more wears. The difference is not the price per garment; it is the wears per garment. A $150 abaya worn 250 times beats a $40 dress worn 40 times by a wide margin.
Track the yearly figure, not the monthly spend. A wardrobe that costs $340 a year to buy and $40 a year to repair, producing 480 wears a year, runs at 79 cents a wearing. That single number tells you whether the wardrobe is working.
When does a garment stop being worth mending?
A garment stops being worth mending when the next repair costs more per added wearing than a replacement would. Work it out before you take it to the tailor.
Estimate the wears left. A well-made abaya in its fourth year, worn twice a week, has perhaps 100 wears left before the fabric thins at the seat or the colour fades at the shoulders. If the repair is $30, that is 30 cents per added wearing. If a replacement costs $140 and would deliver 300 wears, that is 47 cents per wearing. The repair wins.
Reverse the numbers and the answer flips. A garment with 30 wears left and a $40 repair adds $1.33 per wearing. A replacement at $140 over 300 wears is 47 cents. Replace it.
The signals that a garment is near the end: fabric thinning at stress points, colour loss that no wash will fix, a lining that has been replaced once already, seams that keep failing in new places. When two of those appear together, the arithmetic usually says replace.
Keeping the count
A notebook or a spreadsheet with four columns is enough: garment, price paid, wears to date, repair money spent. Update it once a month. The cost per wearing falls as the wears column grows, and the moment it stops falling is the moment to look at the garment honestly.
This is the discipline of a patient saver applied to cloth. The price on the tag is the least interesting number in the wardrobe. The wears are the ones that decide.
