Editorial policy

Every note on this site answers one question and names what it read. Sources are primary where a primary source exists: the fibre content and care labelling printed on the garment, the published standard or test method behind a claim, a retail size chart with its measurement points, a laundry or conservation reference, or a piece of textile literature with an author and a date. A note that relies on a secondary source says so in the sentence, not in a footnote.

Notes are dated. The date is the day the note was last checked against its sources, and it moves when the check is repeated or when a rule changes. Where sources disagree, the note says that they disagree and describes the disagreement rather than picking the convenient figure. Where no reliable figure exists, the note says that no figure is available. Nothing on this site is estimated and presented as measured.

The desk is independent and is not paid by any manufacturer, mill, marketplace or label. No note contains a sponsored link, an affiliate link or a discount code.

Corrections are published. If a note is wrong, it is revised and the revision is described at the foot of the note, with the date of the correction and the source that settled the point. A passage is not deleted to hide an error, and a note is not rewritten to flatter a source. Readers who report an error with a source are credited unless they ask not to be.
